Wayanad The Green Paradise

 

Wayanad district stands on the southern top of the Deccan plateau and its chief glory is the majestic Western ghats with lofty ridges interspersed with dense forest, tangled jungles and deep valleys, the terrain is rugged. Quite a large area of the district is covered by forest.

 

Places of Importance

 

 

There are various places of touristic, ecological, religious and historic importance in the district. Thirunelli Temple is a very old temple on the foothills of Brahmagiri. Edakkal Caves, 32 km from Kalpetta near Ambalavayal, is famous for its pre-historic carvings and paintings. Muthanga is a wild life sanctuary. It is on the way from Mysore to Sulthan Bathery.

 

Thirunelli Temple

 

Thirunelli  is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu on the side of Brahmagiri hill in Kerala. Inscriptions in this temple date back to the period of Bhaskara Ravi Varma I (962–1019 CE). Thirunelli temple located in what is now the Wayanad district of Kerala, near the Papanasini River.  The name Thirunelli derives from the nelli, the Malayalam word for Indian gooseberry of the Amla tree.

Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves located 1000 metres high on Ambukutty Mala 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India's Western Ghats. They lie on an ancient trade route connecting the high mountains of Mysore to the Malabar coast ports. Inside the caves are pictorical writings believed to be from neolithic man, evidence of the presence of a prehistoric civilisation existing in this region. Such stone age carvings are very rare and these are the only known examples in southern India.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is an animal sanctuary in Wayanad, Kerala, south India. It is on the way from Mysore to Sultan Battery. Wild animals such as Indian Bison, elephant, deer and tiger has been spotted. There are also quite a few wild birds in the sanctuary.Peacocks and Peafowl tend to be very common in the area.It is spread over 344 km² and is about 16 km east of Sultan Battery, the nearest large town.The sanctuary is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km²), including all of the sanctuary, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2100m above sea level.Chembra is located near the town of Meppady and is 14 km west of Kalpetta. It is part of the Wayanad hill ranges in Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamilnadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. Chembra peak is accessible by foot from Meppady. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipments on hire charges to the tourists. Permission from the forest office in Meppady is required for trekking up to the Chembra peak. A heart shaped lake en route to the top of the peak is a major tourist attraction. The lake is believed to have never dried up.

Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam is an adventure spot in Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of 1740 m. Pakshipathalam boasts of a cave that is said to have been used by rishis in ancient times. On the Karnataka side it is also known by the name of Munikal cave. 

Banasura Sagar Dam

The Banasura Sagar Dam is located 21 km from Kalpetta, in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia and an ideal starting point for hikes into the surrounding scenic mountains. It is an important tourist attraction.

In the dam's reservoir there is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. The islands with the Banasura hills in the background provide a spectacular view. 

Kurava Island

The Kuruva Island, 950 acres of evergreen forest on the tributaries of east following river Kabini, is an ideal picnic spot, far away from the disturbance of city life. The island is uninhabited. Rare spicies of birds, orchids and herbs are the sovereigns of this supernal kingdom.

Pazhassi Tomb

The memorial of the 'Lion of Kerala' - Veera Pazhassi Raja - who organised the guerilla warfare against the British East India Company, is situated at Mananthavady.

Pookode Lake

It is a natural fresh water lake, brimmed with evergreen mountains. The weather here is salacious; the scenic beauty, hypnotizing and the nature, unspoiled. The lake has an area of 8.5ha.and surrounded by natural forest. Boating in the lake can be an enthralling experience.

Soojipara Waterfall

Soojipara is one of the beautiful places in Wayanad.The water falls from 100 FT to 300ft heights is the uniqueness. To reach the waterfall, one has to trek down1 km.

Meenmutty Falls 

Meenmutty falls is located 29 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 metres. Meenmutty falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District,  is the second largest waterfall in Kerala. One must hike about 2kms through the jungle to get there. It is  the most unspoiled in its natural setting. Each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest.The path is quiet dangerous and tiresome, but the waterfalls is worth it

Phantom Rock

Located close to Ambalavayal , Phantom Rock named so because of its skull head shape, is locally called Cheengeri Mala. The immediate surroundings offer excellent photo opportunities.

Ambalavayal Heritage Museum

The Ambalavayal Heritage Museum is situated in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Being an archeological museum in Wayanad, Ambalavayal heritage museum has a good collection of some rare artifacts that date back to the 2nd century. They are a testimony to the fact that ancient human civilization existed here in an organized form. Among the collection of the artifacts and curios, one can find items like arrows, bows, prehistoric stone weapons, clay models and sculptures, etc. The Ambalavayal heritage museum, Kerala has an interesting collection for historians and layman alike.

 

Gopalsamy Betta, Muthumalai, Mysore, Masinagudy, Ooty, Coorg, Irrippuwaterfalls, Bella elephant camp and Nagarhole national park are the neighborhood attractions.
